Online photographs make it easy to fall for an image, but a confident art purchase needs more than a thumbnail. Check who made the work, what will arrive and how it fits your space. Save the details you relied on when ordering.
Identify the artist and the work
A product page should name the artist or studio and distinguish the original photograph from the printed edition you are buying. Read the story behind the image if one is provided, but be cautious of broad claims such as "investment grade" or "museum quality" without supporting detail. A meaningful purchase does not need an invented resale promise.
Understand the printed object
Compare paper and canvas as physical finishes, not merely price options. Look for information on surface, glazing, matboard, frame and what arrives ready to hang. Ask if the named substrate or protective material is unclear. The canvas-versus-framed guide explains the visual differences to consider.
Measure the outside dimensions
Use the complete finished size listed for the selected variant. A matboard and frame change how much wall the work occupies. Mark the outline on your wall and view it from the main seat. If you are considering a pair, include the gap between works in your total width.
Inspect several kinds of images
A clean artwork view shows the photograph, a close-up shows texture and finish, and a room view helps with atmosphere. Styled room images are illustrative; furniture and wall proportions can make a print look larger or smaller than it will in your home. Use the actual dimensions as the final check.
Read delivery and return terms before paying
Confirm the current market currency, production location, estimate before dispatch, shipping method and what happens if a parcel is delayed or damaged. Read eligibility for change-of-mind returns, particularly on discounted or custom orders. The current refund policy should govern your decision, not a short reassuring label.
Keep a useful record
Save the product URL, variant description, outside dimensions, price and order confirmation. If you need help comparing two options in your room, send a straight-on wall photograph and measurements to the styling service before ordering.
You can shop every artwork in one place — and if you are buying for someone else, a gift card sidesteps the size question entirely.

Online buying recipe
Three decisions that make online art buying feel safer
Read the room mockup
Use styled imagery to understand scale, palette and how the print behaves in a real room.

Compare as a pair
Seeing related prints together helps you decide whether one artwork is enough or a set would feel stronger.
Follow the collection path
Collections and print sets are useful shortcuts when the full catalogue feels too wide.
